We will not allow fracking in the George Washington National Forest!

Tell Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, that we will not accept industries that are exempt from clean air and water protections, and we most certainly, will not accept oil and gas development in the George Washington National Forest.

Dear Secretary Vilsack,

Streams and rivers originating in the George Washington National Forest (GWNF) provide drinking water to over 4 million people across Virginia and in Washington, DC.

The USFS is currently considering allowing hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) in the GWNF under the new plan for the forests. Because oil and gas operations have been shielded from many national requirements including air and water regulations, toxic chemical use reporting, and liability connected with spills, drilling the GWNF forests will put our clean air and drinking water at risk for decades to come.

Our local drinking water supplies and unique and sensitive natural, scenic and recreational areas must be protected. We encourage you to ban drilling in the GWNF. Please help us maintain the clean water and air that we, and over 1 million visitors to the George Washington National Forest each year, rely on.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
